Utopian & Inaccessible
Modern-current, new, contemporary, right now, immediate, changing constantly, something we’ve never had before (i.e. facebook is modern but fashion is cyclical and not modern). Industrial revolution (incorporating the American & specifically the French revolutions) took the world from a Feudal & Agrarian economy into the modern era of Capitalism & the Factory based economy of the Bourgeoisies.
Modernity-Effects of the Modern, the conditions of, the act of, and results of living in a modern world. How is produces & alters us.
Modernism-Representations in art that REFLECT OR RESPOND pro or anti modernity.
Effects of the Modern in the late 19th & 20th Centuries:
Nature of Work Changes: sell an hour of work rather than a product, most people’s capital was their lives. We start buying and selling people.
Urbanization: people left the country in masses for the city for low paying jobs, just enough $ to not die.
Transportation: Boats & Trains changed both the availability & way in which people saw, accessed and perceived the world.
Agricultural Technology: improves radically allowing for fewer workers to produce more product diverting labor to other industries. No longer subsistence based.
Immigration & Cultural Interaction through continued colonization
Communication: Newspaper & Telegraph
Wardrobe: due to cheaper production costs people are able to have larger wardrobes and to alter their identity and achieve anonymity.
Time Binding Media: lasts a long time, from one generation to the next etc such as pyramids, stone tablets, sculpture etc. While they last a long time they are site specific and cannot move.
Space Binding Media: Newspapers, Radio etc which unite people across distances for a short period of time but are designed to be impermanent.
Expressing: Like juicing an orange, squeeze out the essence into a new product
Perspective: Technical tool but also the viewer’s interpretation, personally, culturally, situational etc.
